Acciording to CMHC, Greater Victoria’s housing starts declined 23% in April 2021 vs last year. New housing is 358 vs 467 in April 2020.
However, starts are still up 21% year-to-date at 1,332 vs last year’s 1,097.
Langford continues to lead with 169 in April followed by Sidney at 71 and Colwood’s 27.
Victoria posted 14 new homes and Saanich started 17.
Metchosin boosted their new housing by 400% with a total of 4 new units vs 0 last year.
Highlands is down 100% with zero new homes year-to-date vs 1 last year.
Housing challenges continue due to slow rezonings and rising regulatory costs in most municipalities especially the core – Victoria, Saanich and Oak Bay.
