Thank You Readers

In my final week as VRBA President, I want to offer a special thank you to T-C readers for reading my weekly columns on housing.

A constant theme has been that homes must be affordable as well as professionally-built and energy efficient.

This year, VRBA’s industry voice led to two important achievements:

Education Standards for BC Builders

The province implemented education and training standards for builders in BC, recognizing education is the foundation of professionalism and consumer protection.

Uniform Building Code

Legislation was passed creating uniform interpretation of the BC Building Code, rather than multiple interpretations by municipalities – wasting money, time and resources.

We have more to accomplish:

Fair Taxation

BC often charges the Property Transfer Tax three times during the development of a new home – an embedded, unfair tax ultimately paid by buyers. Fairness dictates a tax should be paid once.

Asbestos Abatement Rebate

BC’s expensive regulations for handling asbestos found in tile, drywall mud, insulation, and other products must be mitigated with a rebate for consumers for reasons of affordability, health and safety.

We will continue leading these and other changes on behalf of consumers and our members.

We are fortunate to be able to initiate change in Canada, so on this day, please take a moment to remember those that sacrificed to make it possible.

Best wishes to my successor, President-Elect Maurizio Conforti and thank you all for your support.
