Sensible Solutions Will Improve Housing

VRBA promotes common sense solutions to BC’s housing challenges. Here are a few suggestions:

  • Uniform Building Code

Multiple municipal interpretations of BC’s Building Code waste money and resources. A simple solution is uniform interpretation by the province, a common practice in the rest of Canada.

  •  Amalgamation

The CRD has 91 councilors and mayors in a region of 360,000 people. Our planning and governance model is out of step in a world of climate change and rising costs. Consolidate and work together on issues of housing and infrastructure.

  • Single Property Transfer Tax

BC often charges the PTT three times on a new home during development. If a tax must be paid, fairness and affordability dictate the tax should be charged once.

  • Accredited Training for Builders

As energy efficiency in homes increases, unintended consequences can be avoided by mandatory, industry-led education and training, similar to realtors and architects.

  • Asbestos Abatement Rebate

The federal government promoted and subsidized asbestos in homes. Now a renovation rebate is required to offset costly govt regulations for testing and handling this material. A new home or renovation is usually a family’s largest investment.

These solutions will improve affordability, professionalism, and health and safety. It’s just common sense.
